"The Mulu Caves 2009 expedition was based at Camp 5 in the Melinau Gorge. A team of sixteen British cavers, with the close support of National Park staff and local porters, carried out exploration in Southern Benarat and Northern Api. A total of 27.3 of cave were explored and surveyed and the total length of the Clearwater Cave System was extended to 175.6 kms." Extract from The Mulu Caves Project.
This expedition was first major expedition to Mulu where a helicopter was not used. The local helicopter company no longer based any aircraft in the area and the cost of re-positioning from Kuching would have been prohibitive. It fell to me to make the local logistical arrangements, so I arranged for local people to be used to transport everything from Mulu National Park Headquarters to Camp 5, a distance of around 16kms, using boats and porters. They even carried a freezer so that we could eat fresh meat.
More information about the expedition can be found at The Mulu Caves Project website.
